Foley Caboose Club seeking volunteers

Posted

The Caboose Club, the group that designed Foley’s model train exhibit and keeps it operating, is seeking volunteers. Volunteers are also needed to drive the event train that gives rides around Heritage Park. Often described by visitors as delightful and the highlight of a trip to the area, the model train exhibit and the event train are both free to the public.

Qualifications for volunteers to drive Foley’s event train include the ability to drive safely and enjoy talking with visitors, as well as a clean driving record.

For the model trains, the main qualification is someone who is willing to learn about the model railroad layout, its operation and history, and then enjoy sharing the information with visitors. An interest in model railroads might be helpful, but is not necessary, since volunteers will learn for themselves how the layout works and the reasons for the various buildings and attractions. There is also a need for volunteers with a talent for electronic maintenance and repair of digitally controlled locomotives and power supplies. There is also a need for volunteers who enjoy talking with visitors about the history of railroading in America and the 0 scale models.

According to Trip Advisor, the model train exhibit is Foley’s top attraction, and has been for over five years. Last year, over 27,000 visitors visited the model train exhibit, which is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, from 10 am until 2 p.m. The model trains are located in the heart of Foley, just behind the 110-year old Depot at 125 E. Laurel Avenue.

The event train provides free rides around Foley’s Heritage Park and along the Wilbourne Rose Trail on Saturday’s year around, and also on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the summer months. The event train boards in front of the depot.
