FOLEY - Deputy Chief of Police Thurston Bullock met with the Foley council on Monday, June 5, with plans from the Foley Police Department to donate to a local charity. The police department has come into a surplus of abandoned bicycles, which they are required to keep for 90 days in case anyone claims ownership. As of now, they currently have 33 bicycles that have reached the 90-day status, and Deputy Bullock came to present plans to donate the bikes to a local cause.

“There is a program through Liberty Church where you take these bikes, and they make them more ornamental. Flowers go into the front basket, and then they’re purchased for contribution,” said Bullock. “It’s $125 per bike, and with that donation, if they sell all the bikes, that will feed 200 plus kids for an entire school year. So we’re asking that we declare them as surplus and contribute them to that cause.”

“In the past, we didn’t keep up with it, and then had a very large amount of these bicycles. This is a very good idea,” Charlie Ebert of the Foley city council said.

The Adopt a Bike Program is available to everyone who would like to participate through either donating a bike or adopting one. To learn more about the program, visit Liberty Church’s Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/foodandhope/.
