FOLEY – In preparation for the upcoming year, the Foley Planning Commission has released the list of the FY2019 Public Projects to the city council for review. Throughout the year, the projects will go before the Planning Commission to be reviewed and recommended to the council for either denial or approval. This list was released to give the council an advance look at what would be coming before them throughout the upcoming year.

There are three large projects planned within the Engineering Department. The first is a roundabout at the intersection of Pride Drive and South Pine Street, right in front of the high school. The project will include the construction of a single lane roundabout that will provide access management improvements along Pride Drive between South Pine Street and Highway 59. Estimated cost is $1,418,000.

The second project will be traffic safety improvements at the intersection of County Road 12 and Foley Beach Express, estimating the cost of $359,106. This will include the construction of offset left turn lanes along the Beach Express and 12.

Finally are plans for South Juniper Street Extension, going from Juniper Street southward from Miflin Road then westward to Highway 59 intersection near County Road 20. Estimated cost is $1,000,000.

There will be one major project in the Environmental Department, with the Bon Secour Water Quality Project. The project will be done in phases, with this phase consisting of the purchase of the 94 acres of property and the design and engineering of the water quality treatment project. The project will be diverting river flows over a 5-year storm event into a regional stormwater facility to remove sediments. The flows will then filter through a larger constructed wetland to treat the stormwater for pathogens, nutrients, and heavy metals. The water will re-enter the river at a slower velocity after treatment. The total project, estimated at $1,515,970, is funded by a NFWF grant.

In the Horticulture Department, a Kemko style building housing an office, restroom, and drive in bay for storage, will be constructed on Fern Avenue at the greenhouse complex. Cost is estimated at $35,000.

In Nature Parks, Graham Creek will be having an ADA Memorial Trail Addition estimated at $12,500, which will complete the entrance of the ADA trail with rubberized matting from the parking area to the arbor.

Recreation and Sports Tourism will see an estimated $80,000 maintenance barn construction for mowers on its Highway 98 complex.

Mel Roberts Park is looking to get a bathroom facility at the tennis courts, and a possible modular building to house restrooms or utilize the existing storage building. Cost is estimated at $80,000.

Signage will be put either at the road or on the Event Center labeling it, with an estimated cost of $25,000.

Finally, a Pressbox construction, estimated at $75,000, will be built on a platform at top of the bleachers at Championship Field.
