FOLEY – As a precautionary measure, Foley Mayor John Koniar signed a document issuing a local state of emergency for Foley. This declaration allows city officials to allocate city staff that might be required over the weekend should the anticipated effects of the oncoming storm warrant action. A statewide state of emergency issued by Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey went into effect on Friday, Oct. 6, 2017 at 7:00 a.m.

City officials report this declaration allows the city to exercise all necessary emergency authority for protection of lives and property for residents. It also provides for the restoration of local government services with a minimum of interruption.

Tropical Storm Nate is expected to become a Category 1 hurricane by the time it makes landfall on Sunday, Oct. 8, 2017, between southeast Louisiana and the Florida peninsula. Winds of 75 mph and gusts to 90 mph are expected near the Alabama coast. Tropical storm force winds may be felt as early as Saturday, Oct. 7, 2017.
