Four of five council members, mayor elected unopposed

Foley’s mayor and four out of five city council members are unopposed in the upcoming municipal election. A resolution was passed at the Aug. 1 Foley city council meeting declaring the unopposed candidates duly elected to office.

Mayor John E. Koniar, J. Wayne Trawick of District 1, Vera J. Quaites of District 2, Ralph G. Hellmich of District 3 and Charlie J. Ebert III of District 5 will each serve another four-year term of office beginning the first Monday in November 2016.

In Foley’s District 4, incumbent C. Rick Blackwell is opposed by Frances Holk-Jones. The municipal election will be held on Aug. 23, at the Foley Civic Center. Council representatives are elected by district, so only residents of District 4 are eligible to vote. Polls will open at the Foley Civic Center at 7 a.m. and remain open until 7:00 p.m. This is the only polling site for this election.

A map showing the 2016 voting district map is available online at CityOfFoley.org, at Foley City Hall, the Foley Public Library and the Foley Welcome Center, so that residents can determine if they reside in this district. Voting districts are redrawn for each municipal election to ensure that each of Foley’s five districts include about the same number of residents. As the city grows, sometimes neighborhoods are moved into another district to keep the districts balanced. Foley’s council districts were redrawn and approved in December of 2015.

A run-off election, if necessary, will be held on Oct. 4, 2016.
