Gertie Mae Stearns of Foley, Alabama passed into life eternal on Sept. 23, 2018, at the age of 95. She was surrounded by her children, Barry, Trudy (Clare) and Marybeth, and welcomed to heaven by her husband, Mort, and eldest son, Dennis (Susan).

Gertie's life was marked by a deep faith in God, an enormous love of family and friends, and a true sense of adventure. Her early years as one of five girls were spent in Arkansas. The family moved to Kingsford, Michigan in time for her to attend and graduate from Kingsford High School.

After high school, her spirit of adventure and service carried her to Niagara Falls, New York, where she wired airplanes for Bell Aircraft during WWII. It was when she returned to Michigan that she met and married Mort in 1946. They were married for 59 years until his death in 2005.

She will be forever remembered as a prayer warrior with an incredible gift for hospitality, always welcoming people in and feeding them well. Gert also served her church and community throughout her life, from early days as a Cub Scout leader to later years as a mobile missionary and a volunteer with various organizations in her adopted home of Foley.

In addition to three of her children, she is survived by four grandchildren (Shannon, Heather, Katie and Kevin) and six great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Pleasant View Baptist Church in Foley on Sunday, Sept. 30 at 4 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Operation Christmas Child program at Samaritan's Purse, or Alabama Baptist Disaster Relief.
