Bayshore Christian hitter/blocker helped Eagles land the 2020 state title

FAIRHOPE -  Bayshore Christian volleyball leader Cassidy Granger will play for the Badgers next season both on the court and the beach. The BSCS hitter/blocker helped lead the Eagles to the 2020 state title in the programs’ first season in AHSAA Class 1A competition. Along the way she recorded more than 1,000 kills starting as a seventh grader under Eagles coach Dave Omtvedt.

“Cassidy is the kind of player that every coach wants,” he said. “She’s great and her play speaks for itself, but she also wants to help everybody else play their best. She wasn’t the best ball handler in the seventh grade, but she worked so hard and is just amazing at the net. She started for me as a freshman and just kept getting better. Now at this level, she’s a terminator at the net.

“And this year, our first season that we could qualify for the playoffs and go to state, she led us all the way to the title and was named the Class 1A state championship MVP. Hate to see her go, but I know Springhill is getting a very special person as well as a great player. We’re all very proud of her and the whole team. They all earned it as a team. We’re so proud of them.”

Granger thanked everyone who helped her along the way including Omtvedt.

“He is a fantastic coach and helped me 100 percent all the way to get better and better. He’s very dedicated to us and committed to making us, not just better players but good teammates and having fellowship. Just has a great way of doing all that and also bringing God into it too,” she said.

She also said playing for the Badgers and legendary head coach Peggy Martin is a perfect fit.

“I like Springhill for so many reasons. Not just coach (Peggy) Martin who I’m so excited about playing for. Also, I like staying close to home so my mom and friends and family can come and watch me play. I can also be able to come back here and help Dave coach when I can. Just no negatives at all to play at Spring Hill.”

Granger plans to major in biochemistry and pursue a career in medicine. Martin became the winningest coach in NCAA Division II volleyball history and is college volleyball's overall career leader in wins by a head coach with 1,375 victories as of 2019.
