Mobile disposal crew called to remove device

ORANGE BEACH, AL – Orange Beach police were standing by at the Orange Beach Public Library on the morning of Oct. 31 waiting on a crew from Mobile to examine a hand grenade found near a dumpster on city property.

The device was found between 8-8:30 a.m. by a city employee working on the grounds and the fire department and police department were called to the scene. It was removed without incident about 10:15 a.m.

“We believe it’s inert,” Police Spokesman Lt. Steve Brown said. “We’re treating it like it’s a live device and they are coming over to take a look at it.”

An Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was on the way over from Mobile to remove the device.

Officers on the scene said it looked like a novelty device and had no spoon or pin and it was covered in rust.

“We’re just make sure it’s safe,” Brown said.

Brown said police in Orange Beach had a busy weekend. On Oct. 30 about 12:30 a.m. a fishing boat ran into the seawall in Perdido Pass and three passengers had to be rescued. None were seriously injured. The boat wasn’t retrieved until the afternoon of Oct. 30.

On Oct. 30 at an apartment directly west of the library/senior center property, police were called to the scene of a stabbing incident. A male subject received a stab wound to the right side of his chest, Brown said.

He was transported to Sacred Heart in Pensacola with what was believed to be nonlife threatening injuries.
