Gulf Shores High School athletic facilities will soon see big changes. A $4.6 million project was unanimously approved by the city council during the Regular Council Meeting June 22.

Blake Phelps, Economic Development Coordinator, presented the two resolutions to the council. One resolution is to rework the existing locker rooms and refurbish the gym. The project includes the addition of visitor locker rooms, trainer room and more space for the female athletes. The second resolution awarded the bid for a new auxiliary gym to Rolin Construction for $4.6 million and amended a contract with Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood for design and engineering services for $43,000 bringing the total of that contract to $393,000.

The auxiliary gym addition will provide practice space but will be regulation size and have the capability to host games. The gym will be lined with a full regulation basketball and volleyball court and will also fit two wrestling mats. The addition will also serve as a main entrance to both gyms and feature a lobby, ticket booth, restrooms and concessions.

“We are excited about the Gulf Shores High School locker rooms and gymnasium renovation as well as the addition of an auxiliary gym.  The renovations of our locker rooms will allow us to provide updated facilities for several female sports on both junior varsity and varsity levels.  Additionally, we will be adding to locker rooms for junior varsity and varsity basketball and wrestling. The addition of an auxiliary gym will provide much needed practice space for all sports and providing extra competition facilities that will be especially useful for volleyball and wrestling.  The overall project is another example of the city of Gulf Shores commitment to providing the best facilities for our students,” said Matt Akin, Gulf Shores City School superintendent.

City officials said renovations to the existing gym and locker room and underway. Construction on the new gym is expected to begin within the next two weeks and should be complete by the end of February.
