Gulf Shores home destroyed in Dec. 22 blaze

GULF SHORES, AL – A house on West Lagoon Avenue in Gulf Shores was considered a total loss after a five on the morning of Dec. 22.

Battalion Chief Kevin Tolbert said crews initially got the call at 5:20 a.m.

“We were called out to a fully involved structure fire,” Tolbert said. “When the first crew arrived on the scene it was already fully involved. At that time the main objective was to protect exposure next door. It was taking a lot of heat so we got that protected.

“Then we were able to get the fire knocked down and were able to finish putting it out. It’s going to be a total loss.”

Crews were on the scene most of the day and even returned the morning of Dec. 23 to make sure the scene was safe.

“There were still crews out there this morning working on some hotspots that needed extinguishing,” Tolbert said. “There’s probably going to be people out there the rest of the day.”

Tolbert said there were 10 firefighters from Gulf Shores, five members from the Gulf Shores and Oyster Bay volunteer department and a crew of four from Orange Beach working on the fire at its height.
