The Baldwin County Historical Society (BCHS) will meet Feb. 16, at the VFW Post 5660, located at 950 Nichols Avenue; Fairhope.  The meeting will start at 2 p.m.

BCHS is the oldest historical organization for Baldwin County, founded in 1923 with the purpose of promoting the history of Baldwin County.

Susan Stein will be the guest speaker and is a member of Fairhope United Methodist Church, Friends of the Fairhope Library, Eastern Shore Art Association, Friends of the Fairhope Museum, and the Baldwin County Historical Society.

Stein will speak on “The Secret Training Mission at the Grand Hotel in WWII”.  “Operation Ivory Soap,” was a top secret project kept "classified" for more than a half-century. It is not even mentioned in the official history book "The Army Air Forces In World War II."

Stein has worked for the Grand Hotel, at Point Clear, for over 33 years. Through her years of working at the Grand Hotel, she listened to the stories about the Grand Hotel, gathered photos and memorabilia becoming the “unofficial historian”.

She was promoted to the position of “Historian of the Grand Hotel” on March 19, 2018.  Stein was the 2019 nominee from the Grand Hotel for the  Historic Hotels of America's “Historian of the Year.”

Stein grew up in Atmore and has been a resident of Fairhope since 1977.  She is a graduate of Escambia County High School, Atmore, Alabama, and received a degree in Art Education from the University of South Alabama, in Mobile.

All meetings of the Baldwin County Historical Society are open to the public and there is no admission charge.  For more information on Baldwin County Historical Society email: bchSociety1923@gmail.com.
