LOXLEY — Two men were arrested on drug trafficking charges when deputies with the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office discovered approximately 28 pounds of ICE in the trunk during a routine traffic stop on Interstate 10 Tuesday.
Kevin Silva Tavares, 25, of Cartersville, Georgia, is in jail on a $305,000 bond, charged with receiving stolen property and trafficking a controlled substance. Jose Luis Arias Castillo, 47, of Mexico is in jail on a $1 million bond, charged with trafficking.
Both men were arrested after the Kia Optima driven by Tavares was stopped by BCSO deputies near the 53-mile marker eastbound on Interstate 10 Tuesday. The registered owner of the vehicle was not present.
“(Tavares) stated that they were headed to the Tampa area from Houston,” according to a BCSO release issued Wednesday. “He also stated that they were going to Tampa to work for approximately two months.”
The passenger, Jose Luis Arias Castillo, claimed to be traveling from Dallas to an undisclosed city in Florida to simply view the city. Both subjects had several articles of religious paraphernalia on their person and throughout the vehicle.
A consent search was conducted and during the search an aftermarket speaker box was located in the trunk.
“The box was extremally heavy and after using a handheld x-Ray machine, images of several bundles were shown being concealed,” according to the release. “Once open, it was discovered to be approximately 28 pounds of ICE (methenamine). A stolen firearm was also discovered in the vehicle.”
