Incoming councilwoman’s comments could lead to court

Elberta’s final town council meeting with its outgoing council members went without incident last week, but comments made by an incoming council member could lead to legal action.

Councilwoman Elect Vicky Norris took time during the public comments section of the meeting to question some business practices by Elberta resident John Culver.

“I’m curious about what’s going on over at John Culver’s place,” Norris said. “I see them bringing in vehicles over there and they’re supposed to be impounded – don’t we have an impounding facility?”

Culver had allegedly been parking vehicles at a residential property he owns, which Norris said had garnered complaints from neighbors.

“If they’re paying the town impound fee and then paying John Culver personally, what’s going on?” Norris asked.

Mayor Marvin Williams said he was not aware of any problems with Culver’s business operations.

“I have no idea what goes on at John Culver’s,” Williams said. “That’s not my business. I don’t know a thing about it.”

Williams added that while he wasn’t aware of any problem, he felt the incoming council could take action if they desired.

“When the new council comes in, they can make any adjustment they want to,” Williams said. “I do know he has a business license where he is allowed to go in different places and work on them, not a set garage.”

Several council members disagreed with Williams, saying his license did not apply to the site about which Norris spoke.

“He’s not licensed for that location,” Councilman John Conti said. “When I looked at his license last, it was Highway 98, not that location.”

Norris pushed forward in her comments.

“I like John well enough and I’m all about people being able to do business on their own property, but you can’t be doing town business, you can’t drop off cars that have been fixed up by the police department – it kind of borderlines on racketeering,” Norris said.

Sources close to Culver said he felt the “borderlines on racketeering” comment made by Norris could be perceived as slander and that he would possibly be pursuing legal action against Norris for the comments she made.
