Golfer Elaine Wood recently was recognized for her play. The University of Montevallo senior was named Feb. 23 as the Peach Belt Conference golfer of the week. The Spanish Fort High School graduate was honored after tying for seventh during the spring opener at Florida Southern College. She shot a 222 (74-73-75) to lead the team.

Wood carded a 225 (72-76-77) to place seventh in the Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational, where the team finished as runner-up. She was second among the Falcons. Wood entered the week leading the conference with a 73.8 scoring average.

Women's beach volleyball

Spring Hill College freshman Taylor Hurst has been playing at No. 5 in the lineup. The former Gulf Shores High School volleyball player had a 4-5 record playing alongside Catherine Milwee.

Women's tennis

University of South Alabama senior Monica Mitta was named March 10 as the Sun Belt Conference player of the week. Out of Fairhope High, she was cited for two wins at third singles and two wins at second doubles. She entered the week with a 7-7 record playing at the top three singles spots. She was 11-2 in doubles play.

Another from Fairhope, Loyola University New Orleans sophomore Margaret Adams won 6-1, 6-1 at third singles against Brewton-Parker College. She won 8-0 at second doubles.

Baseball

Millsaps College freshman William Warner started one of the three games he played. The Bayside Academy graduate, who has played shortstop, had one run batted in.

Lurleen B. Wallace Community College pitcher Tony Kucera was 1-0 with two saves and a 2.25 earned run average in seven appearances. He played for Robertsdale High’s Golden Bears.

Mike Farnell of Spanish Fort is hitting .387 and slugging .581 overall for the East Mississippi Lions. The sophomore catcher has played 10 games with seven RBIs, 12 hits, three doubles, a home run and five runs scored.

Men's golf

Junior Andrew Joiner led St. Gregory's University at the South Padre Intercollegiate. The past Toro carded a 152 (72-80) to tie for third overall.

Senior Jesse Redman led Spring Hill at the Mississippi College Invitational. The Spanish Fort graduate shot a 181 (76-71-34) in the rain-shortened event, tying for fifth place.

University of Arkansas freshman William Buhl shot a 147 (75-72) to place 30th at the Southern Intercollegiate. Previously at Bayside, he was fourth among the Razorbacks.
