“The reward for hard work is … hard work.”

Sydney Hotard, 15, understands that old maxim better than most people her age. Sydney, daughter of Kyle and Cayce Hotard of Foley, was recently selected to attend the Joffrey Ballet’s Summer Ballet Intensive program held in New York City. The 7-week intensive program features some of the ballet industry’s best working dancers teaching classical and contemporary ballet technique.

Sydney, who dances at Sherian’s School of Dance in Foley, said the auditions held in January were intense. “You put in all those hours at the studio and at home, working on technique and form. It’s great to have that effort rewarded.”

Sherian Cain, Owner/Director of the Sherian’s School of Dance, said, “We’re so proud of Sydney. She works hard, takes direction and really wants to be the best dancer she can be. She will excel at this workshop and show them that we have a lot of dance talent in Foley, AL.”

In addition to the Joffrey workshop, Sydney competed at the Elite Dance Cup recently held in Biloxi and was awarded a scholarship to a Musical Theater workshop at Oklahoma City University to be held in July. OCU is home to the leading university dance program in the United States.

Sydney knows her support structure is essential to her dance future. “I’m so blessed to have a wonderful dance teacher like Ms. Sherian and such supportive parents. I’m really excited about this summer.”
