Local to Go ‘undoing hangry’ across Baldwin County

Posted

LocalToGo.com is Baldwin County’s latest food delivery service, and is working to stretch across Baldwin County to satisfy residents’ cravings and “undo hangry.”

Owner Justin Smith, who grew up in Daphne, said he didn’t actually intend to start a food delivery service - it was just something that kind of happened.

“I was actually living in Las Vegas working with my dad in medical manufacturing, but I just decided I didn’t want to do this anymore,” Smith said.

Smith began a cross-country road trip that he thought would eventually end in Miami, where he might start an LED installation business.

However, after a stint in Colorado Springs where he worked for a similar food delivery service company, it planted the seed of an idea that bloomed once he got back home to Baldwin.

“I was looking for work down here and a friend of mine actually suggested possibly delivering pizzas,” Smith said. “In that moment, it was like a lightbulb went off.”

Smith said he felt a service like the one Local To Go offers was something needed in Baldwin County.

“At the time I started doing this, I wasn’t aware of any other delivery services in Baldwin County, so I thought this was something folks here really wanted and needed,” Smith said. “This has been the best thing ever. I get to help people, run contests and give stuff away and have a platform.”

Smith said though LocalToGo has only been operating for a little over a month, they’ve continued to see an increase in customers as people became aware of the service.

For a small delivery fee, customers in Foley, Daphne, Spanish Fort, Loxley, Robertsdale and Summerdale can receive food from partnered restaurants in their area, and even some less populated areas like Barnwell are also included in the delivery area. Smith said he’s pushing hard to open into the Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Fairhope areas soon.

Local To Go tries to have food delivered to your door within an hour, which Smith said is key to making sure customers are satisfied.

“We want to be sure people are getting their food as fast and fresh as we can get it to them,” Smith said.

Smith is also an Army veteran who served in Afghanistan, and wants to be able to help fellow veterans, too.

“We partnered with a foundation, the John 9:3 Foundation, so a portion of every delivery is going to back to that foundation to help wounded warriors,” Smith said. “That was important to me - to be able to do something that will help my fellow veterans.”

On the LocalToGo Facebook page, Smith is constantly offering giveaways to supporters of items like gift cards or oil change gift certificates, something he said is just a fun way to give back.

“We’re a legitimate business that tries to help people on the back end,” Smith said. “I’m going to try to give back as much as I can and help Baldwin County because I grew up here and I love this place.”
