Magnolia Springs negotiating bridge repairs contract

Posted

MAGNOLIA SPRINGS - After approximately 20 months, Magnolia Springs is entering into the final stages before repairs to the bridge located along Magnolia Springs Highway become a reality. Three quotes have been received, with the lowest coming in slightly above $43,000. The town has appropriated $50,000 in the budget for this project. There’s potential to save more money buying materials straight from the manufacturer.

During council, it was approved for Mayor Kim Koniar to continue negotiations to attempt to lower the cost, and to enter into a contract not to exceed $44,000. The contract will be proofed by Legal Counsel Brad Hicks prior to any agreement.

“The contract is going to include restriping the bridge, which will result in the removal of thermaplast, and this time they’re going to put on a paint instead of thermaplast because of the wear and tear,” said Koniar. “It will also include fixing part of the bridge where the concrete meets the bridge, and applying tape on several of our speed humps throughout the town for safety, creating higher visibility. There’s a whole list of things that will be handled.”

Council is hoping to get the repairs complete before summertime, when more people are expected to be using the bridge. Koniar says now, with people still staying home due to the closings brought on by COVID-19, it is less busy than it typically is at this time of year, giving a good opportunity for repairs.

The $43,000 is for the bridge work itself, not the engineering costs. Council is seeking to negotiate terms where the total cost for the bridge work and the engineering will come in below the appropriated $50,000. If the total cost is revealed to exceed the budgeted amount, no move forward will take place until the matter is brought back to council for further discussion.
