Marian Electa Barker Metzger passed from this life to eternal life on Dec. 28, 2016, surrounded by her family.

She was born Oct. 25, 1919 in Allendale, South Carolina to Metis and George Barker.

In 1998, she was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, John Yancey Metzger. Marian and John were avid dancers both at Mardi Gras balls and square dance events.

Marian was an excellent seamstress, and made school uniforms for her children and clothes for her grandchildren.

She was active at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus Council 8959, and served countless meals and washed countless dishes in that capacity.

She loved swimming and sailing in Mobile Bay. She and John enjoyed playing bridge with family and friends. She loved music, and was almost constantly humming.

John and Marian were generous with their time and resources in taking the family in for meals and out to eat.

Marian drove the school bus for Christ the King School and the Baldwin County Public Schools for a number of years.

John and Marian began the longstanding tradition of having Sunday meals for the entire family.

Marian balanced her "Mary and Martha" (Luke 10:38-42) roles well; she was about both service and listening to others.

Marian is survived by her younger sister, Metis Barker Hodges, and members of that family. In addition she is survived by her children, John (Rose) Metzger, Electa (Steve) Harmon, Robin (Michael) Hutchison and Bryan Metzger. She had numerous grandchildren, Cheryl (Dean) Metzger Peiskee, Leah Metzger, Tyler Harmon, Marian (Steven) Hall, Sarah Gwendolyn Harmon, Christopher (Kristin) Hutchison and Jesse (Anna) Hutchison. In addition, several great-grandchildren survive her, Ellie and Mae Hall, Rebecca, Jace, Moses and Aria Peiskee; and another expected great-grandchild from Christopher and Kristin Hutchison.

The family is grateful to Kindred Hospice and countless caregivers for their support and excellent care.

Visitation will be in the St. Lawrence Room from 10-11:00 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 31, 2016.

The funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. at St. Lawrence Catholic Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Knights of Columbus 8959 Scholarship Fund at St. Lawrence Catholic Church.
