Melvin Dean Porter, 56, of Summerdale, Alabama, passed away the evening of Sunday, July 15. He joined his Heavenly Father from Sacred Heart in Pensacola, Florida after battling a stroke.

Melvin was born in Kinsley, Kansas on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 23, 1961 to Donald and Nettie Porter.

He married his second wife Juanita Porter of Summerdale, Alabama Aug. 4, 2000 and they had two children whom they raised together.

Melvin Porter worked at Continental Motors in Mobile, Alabama as a machinist. He was well respected for his work ethic as well as skill, and made many close friends there.

He served his country in the National Guard as a young man. He was born and raised in Kansas, but in 2006 he and his family moved to Alabama to enjoy Southern living.

He enjoyed building models, tinkering on anything and riding his bike in the early part of his life. Later, he enjoyed working out at the gym with his friends and fixing computers.

He is survived by his wife, Juanita Porter; his children, Jessica Hinch, Joshua Porter and stepson, Jason Stoddard of Wellington, Kansas, Jaydon Porter and Gabrielle Porter of Summerdale, Alabama; his two grandchildren, Riley and Greyson Mashburn of Wellington, Kansas; his parents, Donald and Rosa Porter of Foley, Alabama; his two brothers, Rory and Bobby Porter of Wellington, Kansas; his two sisters, Sue Hosler and Pam Porter.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Nettie Brooks of Wellington, Kansas; his uncles, Jack, Billy and Orrie Billings, Ben, Clayton and Keith Porter.

The remembrance and celebration of Melvin's life will be held at Foley United Methodist Church, 915 N. Pine St. on Friday, July 27, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. All are welcome to attend.
