Mr. George L. Matthews Jr., loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather, age 76, passed away Tuesday, March 7, 2017.

He was born in Pontotoc, Mississippi, March 28, 1940. Straight out of high school he joined the Army National Guard and served our country in the reserves.

Soon after, he moved to Washington, D.C. to work for the FBI, where he would meet his future wife at a local church. He worked for the Department of Treasury and retired with over 30 years in the federal government, also a lifetime member of NARFE (National Association of Retired Federal Employees).

When looking to retire, he fell in love with the coastal beach town of Foley, Alabama, and has resided here for over 22 years. He was an avid gardener and fisherman.

George L. Matthews Jr. was preceded in death by two grandsons, Douglas and Jonathan Spain.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Charlotte J. Matthews; three daughters, Annette Spain (Tim), Cindy Buethe (Duane), Tammy Trush (David); five grandchildren, Kelly Brown (Colton), Trey Buethe, Matthew Spain, Taylor, Garrett and Jessica Trush; and one sister, Bernice Labrozzi.

Funeral services for Mr. Matthews will be Tuesday, March 14, 2017 starting at 2 p.m. in Pine Rest Funeral Home chapel.

There will be a time for visitation with the family one hour prior to the funeral service.

Burial will follow the service in Pine Rest Memorial Park.

His wife and children are thankful for the loving church family at Berean Baptist Church, where he was an active member.

The Matthews suggest memorial donations be made to Berean Baptist Church in memory of George L Matthews Jr., Berean Baptist Church, 24070 Hwy. 98, Elberta, AL 36530.
