Mrs. Jimmie Ruth Thompson Smitherman, 78, longtime resident of Fairhope, passed away, Saturday afternoon, June 10, 2017.

She was born in Bibb County to John David Thompson and Dorothy Alice Elam Thompson.

She and her husband, Jack moved to Fairhope in 1963. Jimmie was employed in customer service with Southern Bell, which is now AT&T, for 25 years until her retirement.

She loved serving her community. She was a member of the Fairhope Order of the Eastern Star, No. 127 and The Emblem Club of Fairhope, No. 241.

Music was an important part of her life. She was a member of The Jubilee Pickers for over 10 years where she and her husband both played the dulcimer and upon retirement, they traveled all over the United States playing in various cities.

She was preceded in death by her husband, the love of her life, Jack Nelson Smitherman, to whom she was married for 57 years. Their reunion in heaven gives comfort to family and friends alike. Also preceding her in death were her brothers, Joe, Chris and Jeffrey Thompson.

Survivors include her daughter, Robin Smitherman of Fairhope; three sons, Mark Smitherman of Fairhope, Jon Smitherman of Tuscaloosa, Alabama and Patrick (Hope) Smitherman of Loxley, Alabama; four sisters, Linda Hammitt, Woodstock, Alabama, Judy (Jerald) Jackson, Orrville, Alabama, Donna House, Brent, Alabama and Pearline (Travis) Engelbert, Brent, Alabama; and two sisters-in-law, Wanda Thompson and Liz Thompson, both of Brent, Alabama; also surviving is her beloved granddaughter, Grace Smitherman.

A celebration of Jimmie's life will be held at 10 a.m. on June 20, 2017 at Fairhope Avenue Baptist Church, 8717 Fairhope Ave. in Fairhope. Officiating will be Rev. Jerry Brown.

Another service celebrating her life will also be held in Brent, Alabama at a later date.
