Mrs. Mary Alice Mathis, age 86, a native of Fayette, Fayette County, Alabama and a longtime resident of Robertsdale, Alabama, passed away, Wednesday, May 24, 2017.
She was the daughter of George Austin (Teddy) Aldridge and Rebecca Drusilla (Silla) Griggs-Aldridge. Mary was known to all as a sweet, kind and loving person, and for her perseverance.
She lived in Glenn Allen, Alabama for part of her childhood and young adult life. On the 24th of Jan. 1947 Mary was married to her beloved Allen Hodge Mathis in Decatur, Alabama. They moved to California and established a home, started a family and raised two daughters.
After retirement, they moved back to Alabama and made a permanent residence in Robertsdale, Alabama in 1980.
Mary Mathis was preceded in death by her husband, Allen Hodge Mathis; parents, George Austin Aldridge and Rebecca Drusilla Aldridge of Glenn Allen, Alabama; three brothers, Henry L. Aldridge, Massachusetts, Hancel Aldridge, Gladewater, Texas, George E. Aldridge, Elberta, Alabama; three sisters, Annette Ward, Pensacola, Florida, Hazel McClure, Warrior, Alabama, Rebecca Jean Watts, Alabaster, Alabama; one grandson, Nicias Bram (Fox) Melvin, Foley, Alabama.
Mary is survived by her brother, Jessie Franklin Aldridge, Jasper, Alabama; sister, Bertha M. Strickland, Warrior, Alabama; three sisters-in-law, Bobbie Jean Monds, Susie Eicher and Eileen Mathis, all of Bakersfield, California; two daughters, Maria A. Williams, Atascocita, Texas, Rosie A. Fox of Foley, Alabama; four grandchildren, Matthew Addaman, Seattle, Washington, Greta L. Zaehler, Atascocita, Texas, Rebecca A. (Fox) Melvin, Opelika, Alabama, Alexandrea Lorine (Fox) Price, Robertsdale, Alabama; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Chapel services will be held Thursday, June 1, 2017 at 10 a.m. at Pine Rest Funeral Home and Memorial Park LLC, U.S. Highway 98, Foley, Alabama 36535, 251-943-5667.
She will be laid to rest in the Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Spanish Fort, Alabama with her husband.
