Oh, how sweet!

We hosted our annual Sweet Potato Recipe Contest at the Baldwin County Fair on Wednesday, Sept. 20, and boy, did we get some tasty treats! Middle school and high school family and consumer science students received sweet potatoes from local growers to create unique, delicious, fall dishes; some were even quite healthy.

Schools held a local contest to select a winner to compete for cash prizes at the county level. Recipes were judged on use of sweet potatoes, presentation, recipe format, and, of course, taste. Judges Rebecca Catalena, Hope Cassebaum, and Jessica Vaughn were charged with tasting 12 dishes, deciding on a winner for both the junior and senior categories, and selecting the most nutritious recipe. Whew! It was a daunting task, but I didn’t hear too much complaining!

At the end of the day, PJ Dananer from Foley Middle School was the junior division winner with his recipe for Sweet Potato Casserole. Maya Thomas and her Healthy Sweet Potato Skins took top honors in the senior division, and also took home the Most Nutritious Award. Other winners in the junior category were Spanish Fort Middle Schooler Georgia Paradise (Sweet Tater Baby Cakes) in 2nd place and Abbie Bishop (Sweet Potato Muffins) from Fairhope Middle School taking home 3rd place. Senior division 2nd place was Malia Flemming from Foley High School who entered Sweet Potato Latte and Sweet Potato Cheesecake; and 3rd place was Kenneth Carbullido with Twice Baked Sweet Potatoes stuffed with Barbeque Chicken from South Baldwin Center for Technology.

This event is generously sponsored by the Baldwin County Farmer’s Federation and the Baldwin County Sweet Potato Growers. We are very grateful to our sponsors, judges, and the Baldwin County Fair for making this event possible each year. And a special thank you to the Family and Consumer Science instructors and FCCLA sponsors for getting students excited about this event. We are already looking forward to next year.
