• Trojans’ playoff run ends as Bulldogs bite hard on both sides of the ball

DAPHNE, Ala. — The Opelika Bulldogs, their high-scoring offense and their high-efficiency defense dominated Daphne Friday night. The game of the week became one sided as the Bulldogs swept to a 35-6 second-round win at Jubilee Stadium.

The Trojans quest for a 10th-straight win and a rematch with neighboring rival Spanish Fort fell short. Instead the Bulldogs (11-1) and coach Brian Blackmon will take on the Toros (10-2) and SF coach Ben Blackmon in a Class 6A battle of the brothers quarterfinals at Spanish Fort Nov. 18 at 7 p.m.

Weldrin Ford’s 5-yard touchdown run for OHS in the first quarter got the Bulldogs scoring started. Ford added a 59-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter and a 10-yard TD pass from J.D Worth to Jaleen Heard set up a 21-0 lead at the half.

Opelika’s Will Boler picked off Trojans quarterback Chance Newman and returned 30 yards to extend the score to 28-0. In the fourth quarter, Newman threw a 36-yard TD strike to Christian Williams to get Daphne on the board. But the point after kick was not good.

Opelika’s final drive added a 42-yard TD run by Conner Smith. Jamias Presley also had a late interception for OHS. Ford finished with 182 yards on 19 carries. The Bulldogs defense held the Trojans to less than 200 total yards.

There is good news for the Daphne Trojans (9-3) as many of their starters are juniors or younger including linebacker Ty Reynolds, who had two tackles for loss and a sack in the game. There will be time in the offseason to create a team that will advance them even further into the playoffs next year.
