Orange Beach swears in two new police officers

The Orange Beach Police Department welcomed two new officers to its ranks at a swearing in ceremony before the public and the City Council.
The new officers, Officer Michael Dean and Officer Abby Headley, were introduced by Police Chief Joe Fierro during the Jan. 8 city council meeting and sworn in by Orange Beach Municipal Judge Julian B. “Buddy” Brackin.
Fierro said Dean is from Montgomery and attended the Montgomery Police Academy, where in 2013 he received his Alabama Peace Officers' Standards and Training Commission (APOST) certification.
“He went on duty with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office as a patrol officer, as a training officer and also, most recently when we hired him, he was on the burglary task force there,” Fierro said. “So, he is bringing some valuable experience to the police department.”
Headley also received her APOST certification from the Montgomery Police Academy in 2014.

“She immediately went into service with the Jackson Police Department here in Alabama,” Fierro said. “She’s a D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) certified officer, and she had been a patrol officer there throughout her tenure.”
Their swearing in was met with thunderous applause from those in attendance.

No wake in Terry Cove
A public hearing scheduled for the Jan. 15 council meeting was removed from the agenda after a state decision was made to declare Terry Cove an idle only zone.
No date has been determined as to when this will go into effect; however, the Orange Beach Police Department anticipates it will be initiated prior to spring boating season.
Fierro said generally for new regulations like this there is a period to get people accustomed to it before ticketing begins.

Approved at the meeting were:
- Resolution authorizing the execution of a cooperative agreement with the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) in an amount not to exceed $34,500 for permitting, regulating, monitoring, and inspection services.
- Resolution accepting the negotiated price for windows and doors for the Utilities Department from Ladd Architectural Door & Specialty Co., dba Ladsco, in the amount of $19,197.20.
- Resolution authorizing execution of a contract for billboard advertising with the Lamar Company in an amount not to exceed $7,200.
- Resolution authorizing the purchase of a vehicle for the Coastal Resources Department from the Alabama Department of Transportation in the amount of $22,811.
