Other senior events scheduled for August

Diabetes Education Empowerment Program
The Senior Center will host a series of free Diabetes Education Empowerment Programs (DEEP) with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System Tuesdays throughout August and September.
Six classes, Aug. 15 and 22, Sept. 12, 19 and 26, all beginning at 10 a.m., at the senior center, 22651 E. Chicago St., will be taught by Carolyn Bivins, Human Nutrition Diet and Health agent for Baldwin County, and will present information in simple medical terms and concepts using props and pictures in a way that makes learning fun.
DEEP is designed to:
•Educate on how to best control blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

•Empower you to establish relationships with your primary care provider.
•Encourages better nutrition and regular exercise.
•Encourages lifestyle changes that lead to the reducation in the number of diabetes complications (heart disease, blindness, nerve damage etc.) and limb amputations.
•Expresses the importance of developing support networks of family, friends and existing community-based social services.

Soup Kitchen
Lunch with seniors includes a variety of choices from month to month, not just soup, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25 at the senior center. Donations and volunteers are always welcome.

Community Education Program for seniors
U.S. Rep. Bradley Byrne will be among the guests at the Community Education Program for Seniors, hosted by the Thames Senior Center from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Aug. 23 at the PZK Hall, 17933 Alabama 104, Robertsdale.
Register and view vendor displays from 9 to 10 a.m., followed by an introduction by Area Agency on Aging Director Julie McGee with the South Alabama Regional Planning Commission and welcome by Mayor Charles Murphy.
Byrne will speak on key issues from 10:15 to 10:30 a.m., followed by a state update from Alabama Department of Senior Services Commissioner Todd Cotton from 10:30 to 11 a.m. and “How to Protect Yourself from Financial Fraud” by Alabama Securities Commission Director Joseph Borg from 11 to 11:45 a.m.
Summary wrap up and a question and answer session will close the program from 11:45 a.m. to noon followed by a light lunch.

National Thrift Shop Day
The Senior Center will be hosting an outing for National Thrift Shop Day on Thursday, Aug. 17. Meet at the senior center at 9:30 a.m. for an outing of shopping at area thrift stores, followed by lunch. Please reserve your spot by calling the senior center.

National Toasted Marshmallow Day
Meet at the Senior Center at noon Wednesday, Aug. 30 to celebrate National Toasted Marshmallow Day. Marshmallow toasting will begin at 1 p.m. and seniors will play games with marshmallows.
