Robertsdale High alumni host 10th Annual Tea

ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — The Robertsdale High School Alumni Association hosted its 10th Annual Tea Party on Saturday, Feb. 24, at the Baldwin County Coliseum.

For years the tea has been held at the PZK Hall in Robertsdale, but this year, because of a large increase in participants, it was moved to the Coliseum.

“We went from 30 tables last year to 50 this year,” said Evelyn Lowery, one of the event’s organizers. “We simply outgrew the old space. It’s a good problem to have.”

While there were no men allowed in during the event, a sneak peek into the event was allowed before the festivities began.

The event was started from humble beginnings with just a few participants, Lowery said, and has grown to include more than 400 participants this year.”

Each table is decorated with a central theme in mind. This year, tables were decorated with a “School Days” theme with each table decorated as a different area of school life.

Four RHS alumni were honored this year with memorial tables, including one of the event’s original organizers, Myrtis Childress, whose table was hosted by the Class of 1937. A quilt was also donated for raffle by the Ole Ladies Sewing Circle with proceeds going to the Myrtis Childress Memorial Scholarship fund.

Other memorial scholarships were dedicated to Inez Springer, longtime Robertsdale educator and one of the RHS Alumni Founders; Catina Spurlock Saxon, preschool teacher at Robertsdale United Methodist Church; and Joey Steele, RHS alumnus and son of longtime Robertsdale doctor Joseph Steele, hosted by his wife, Tricia Steele.
