Spartans run-pass attack, solid defense stifle Golden Bears

ROBERTSDALE, Ala. — The Golden Bears needed a win. Not only their first win of the season, but also to turnover their lackluster season. But Friday was not a turnaround game as the Golden Bears lost 55-12 at home to the Saraland Spartans.

Within two plays in the opening drives for the Spartans, Dimino Williams ran for 9 yards and then a 61-yard run for a touchdown 50 seconds into the game. Saraland scored again on a 3-yard run by Johnathan Williams to make the score 14-0.

A 20-yard touchdown throw from Stanford committed Jack West to Jay Williams made the score 21-0. West again threw to Jay Williams (51-yards) to the opposing 4-yard line where Johnathan Williams punched in another touchdown for 4 yards, SHS led 28-0 to end the first quarter.

Robertsdale finally forced a punt on Saraland early in the second quarter and also got their first, first down on offense on a 7-yard throw from Nate Krebs to Evan Robertson. The Spartans though kept clogging up holes and creating tackles for losses. On the Bears punt, a mishandled snap led to a Spartans first-and-goal at the RHS 5-yard line. Johnathan Williams scored later (8-yard run) for a 35-0 score.

Robertsdale got a drive going with an 8-yard run from Blake Nichols. Krebs threw a 35-yard completion to Shelton Deen to setup first and goal. Bears Deandre Prim scored a 1-yard touchdown run for the Bears, but then the extra point kick was no good to make the score 35-6.

The Saraland Spartans added an 18-yard throw from West to Arian Belt for a 42-6 score. Robertsdale responded with a 74-yard touchdown run up the middle from Prim (the 2-point conversion try was no good). The Spartans kicked a field goal with 7.4 seconds left in the first half for a 45-12 lead.

After halftime, West was replaced by Lex Singleton. The Golden Bears still struggled to drive the ball due to snap mishandles, multiple penalties and a lost fumble to Saraland’s Jacob Smith.

In the fourth quarter, a shared tackle for a loss from Golden Bears Tyler Foley and Collin Laird showed a no-quit effort by the Bears, but a 25-yard touchdown pass from Singleton to Myles Smith made it 52-12. The Spartans kicking team later nailed a 35-yard field goal to make the score 55-12. When the heavy rain started to pour down after that drive, both teams tried to run out the clock to end the game.

The Spartans accounted for 444 total yards on offense while Robertsdale only accounted for 176 yards on offense. In the 6A Region 1 standings, the Golden Bears have given up the most points with 209 and scored the least with 54 points. Robertsdale (0-5) is off next week and then they will play at Region 1 and county rival Baldwin County High (2-2) on Friday, Sept. 30.
