South Baldwin Chamber of Commerce Welcomes Mamma Mia Pizzeria to Foley

Posted

South Baldwin Chamber Membership Director, Travis Valentine sat down with Brenda Schmucker, the owner of Mamma Mia, a new pizzeria in Old Towne Foley, to learn more about this tasty new business.

Travis: What are some of the most popular items on Mamma Mia menu thus far?

Brenda: We have it all at Mamma Mia! Our menu also highlights a few "Mamma Approved" items including the Wilted Spinach Salad, Mamma Mia! Sandwich, Grande Calzone and The Mamma Mia! Pizza Pie. The House Made Fried Mozzarella Sticks and Bruschetta are getting rave reviews from our customers.

Travis: What is your fave?

Brenda: So hard to pick a favorite! I love everything about Italian food: The sauces, cheeses and pasta. But the thing I come back for most is the Meatball Sandwich. House made meatballs on homemade bread... So yummy!

Travis: What date did you open?

Brenda: December 1, 2016. Thank you, Foley for an awesome 5 months!

Travis: How large is Mamma Mia, and tell me about your great outdoor area?

Brenda: The restaurant is about 1,000 sq. ft. The outdoor seating is in a beautiful covered stone courtyard. There is a fireplace that we use in the cooler months.

Travis: Tell me about what made you want to open a pizzeria? Was this a longtime dream of yours or your daughters or did you see a need in the Old towne Foley Market?

Brenda: My daughter, Nicole (Manager/Creator of the Mamma Mia!) wanted to complete her longtime restaurant experience by operating her own pizza shop. We're a very close family and it's only natural that we would go into business together. Once we decided to open a restaurant, we knew we wanted to open in Foley. We have really enjoyed our time in this city—Nicole even moved to the area.

Travis: Do you have a favorite experience from the restaurant so far?

Brenda: I'd have to say our most memorable experience was the day of our Grand Opening. We had been overwhelmed by the support from the Foley community and on this day in particular, Foley really proved itself as a community of heart. Nicole's pug, Levon, escaped from their backyard just 5 hours before the debut of Mamma Mia! Within an
hour, the police called and reported a siting of Levon, 3 miles from her house! Nicole rushed out to pick him up. Between posters on Facebook, Animal Control, Foley PD and a special shout out to Zana—Disaster was averted! We even opened on time.

Travis: What advice would you give someone who would like to open his or her own restaurant?

Brenda: I am far from being an expert, but so far, I've learned that it's a lot of hard work, backed by a VERY rewarding experience. Make a great product, surround yourself with hardworking people, and the rest will fall into place. Some of the things that are most important to us are cleanliness, great customer service and fantastic food.

Travis: Any specials or promotions people should know about?

Brenda: Our new Mamma Mia! tie-dye t-shirts have arrived and are for sale as well as gift certificates. We also have a nice selection of craft beers.

Travis: How do people find out more about Mamma Mia! Pizzeria?

Brenda: Come in and see us at 246 W. Laurel Ave, Foley, AL, call for carryout at (251) 971-7492 or find us online at facebook.com/mammamiapizzeriafolev
I cannot express enough our sincere thanks to the community of Foley and our wonderful customers and staff! We wouldn't be here without you all.

Mamma Mia Pizzeria is open from 11:00 a.m. until 9 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday; open until 10 p.m. on Fridays and closed Mondays.
