Toros still charging toward playoff berth with region win

SPANISH FORT, Ala. - Late October is a time for potential playoff teams to make their case for consistently big wins. Last Thursday, the Spanish Fort Toros continued their run toward another playoff with a 42-3 home victory over region 1 rival Gulf Shores.

It was a dominating performance from the Toros defense as they held the Dolphins’ offense to 130 total yards. The Dolphins were playing with their fourth quarterback, wide receiver Sebastian Alexander, as they have been decimated with injuries at the quarterback position. The Toros rush defense held Dolphins freshman running back J.R. Gardner to 40 yards on 17 carries and was sound against the RPO (run-pass-option) offense. Toros defensive ends Christian Burkhalter and Mitchell Babbs each had a sack.

Toros senior quarterback Kris Abrams-Draine led the Toros with 170 yards passing and a touchdown on 10 completions (11 attempts). He also rushed for a five-yard TD. Toros sophomore Chico Hixon also ran for a five-yard score in the first quarter.

Toros senior wide receiver Brazil Patrick Patrick had seven receptions for 75 yards and a touchdown. Toros sophomore Jermaine Coleman rushed for 110 yards and two touchdowns on 10. Overall, the Toros had 434 total yards against the Dolphins. The score was 35-3 by halftime as Dolphins kicker John Barros kicked a 35-yard field goal in the second quarter.

The Gulf Shores Dolphins (1-8) will play their final game of the 2019 season at the B.C. Rain Raiders (2-7) this Friday night. The Spanish Fort Toros (5-3) will have a huge game Friday night to determine their 6A playoffs fate when they host the undefeated Saraland Spartans (9-0).
