SPANISH FORT -- Spanish Fort and the Robertsdale went into Friday’s matchup looking to improve in 6A Region 1 play. Despite a promising start from the Golden Bears, the Toros won with a decisive 54-18 score on Spanish Fort’s homecoming night.

RHS started off strong with a fumble recovery from Immanuel Taylor on the Toros’ kickoff return. That led to a 10-yard touchdown run by Golden Bears quarterback Tristian Stevens. The Toros faced a 12-10 deficit until the 8:55 mark in the second quarter when Jackson Burkhalter hit Kris Abrams-Draine on a screen for a 19-yard touchdown pass. The Toros scored 30 points in the second quarter.

The Toros added 21 second-half points while allowing RHS six. Senior Justin LaJesse ran 12 times for 174 yards (for an average of 14.5 yards per carry) and a touchdown. Kris Abrams-Draine had 71 total yards and two touchdowns. Burkhalter had six completions in 14 for 91 yards, three touchdowns and an interception from Robertsdale’s Romaro Settles.

Carlos Johnson had three tackles, two for loss and a blocked extra point against the Bears. Kicker Matthew Quinn had two field goals including a 51-yarder that would have gone for more. The offensive line for the Toros did not allow a sack and allowed only two tackles for loss by the Golden Bears defenders.

After the game, Toros head coach Ben Blackmon addressed the slow start of the game.

“Lack of focus, lack of our mind not being in the game,” he said. “Too many distractions whether that’s homecoming or other things going on.”

Blackmon was thrilled for Abrams-Draine and his impact.

“Kris is Kris. He’s going to make big plays for us, we expect to do that and he always shows up.”

Up next, the Toros (3-1) will travel to the B.C .Rain Red Raiders (0-4). The Golden Bears (1-3) will host the Saraland Spartans (4-0) this Friday night.
