Spanish Fort city leaders are looking to fill the position of municipal judge quickly following the retirement of the city’s first and only municipal judge Jim Roberts.
Last week, the mayor and city council interviewed five different candidates for the position, including the interim municipal judge and the city’s prosecutor.
Derek Rose, who was named as interim judge by the council back in June, was the first to interview for the position.
Following Rose was Rob Stankoski, a Fairhope lawyer who currently does similar work for other Baldwin County municipalities, including Silverhill and serving as Elberta’s prosecutor.
Karol Kemp, who has served as Spanish Fort’s prosecutor since 2001, was the next candidate to interview. Kemp also does some defense work for other city courts and helps fill in for Fairhope Municipal Judge Haymes Snedecker occasionally.
Next to interview with the council was Brent Day, a Mobile native and resident who currently serves as the judge for Mount Vernon and Macintosh, prosecutor and Housing Board Attorney for Bayou La Batre.
Kyle Henderson, a private practice lawyer who has assisted Spanish Fort’s court, was the final applicant interviewed by the council.
Spanish Fort Mayor Mike McMillan said the city would be appointing a replacement soon.
“We don’t have court scheduled for December, but we want to get someone appointed and have that office ready to go by the first of the year,” McMillan said.
