Spanish Fort schedules public hearings on special tax districts

Spanish Fort city leaders have scheduled two public forums to spread information about the possibility of a special tax district within the city to support education and to gauge public reaction to the move.

The hearings are scheduled for Aug. 20 and Sept. 4 at Spanish Fort’s community center during the council meetings on those dates.

Spanish Fort Mayor Mike McMillan said the city’s residents have always been highly supportive of the schools, so this was an option the community could look at as another option to support its schools.

“This council has been kicking around the thought of doing some additional funding for the schools above and beyond what the school board is doing,” Mayor Mike McMillan said. “This would add three mills to the ad valorem tax that would be dedicated strictly to school enhancements.”

McMillan said the funds would be strictly limited to help academics at the schools in the city’s feeder pattern, but could also include helping to beef up security measures at the campuses.

“We’ve always wanted to make sure we’re getting out in front of this special tax district thing,” McMillan said. “We want to keep this on people’s minds and see what the community wants to do.”
