Summerdale purchases land for new fire station

SUMMERDALE - It’s official. A new fire station will be coming to the Town of Summerdale, giving the volunteer department a larger space for training and storage and a central location within its jurisdiction.

The property in question has been paid for and closed on during late-November. The location consists of slightly more than five acres of property at the southwest corner of Highways 32 and 73. The town has purchased signs to display it as the future home of the Summerdale Fire Department. During the December meeting, council approved S.E. Civil Engineering to perform a survey of the property at the price of $3,200.

The new location was the largest request from department volunteers when working on the 20/21 budget. “I know the firefighters are ready, it’s a constant chatter around the station,” said firefighter Tiffany Givens during budget discussions. “Where we keep our spare gear for example, we’re turning around in circles because we can’t fit. We have boots and vests just stacked up on top of each other.” The volunteers also said a central location would allow quicker response times to accidents on both Highway 59 and on the Beach Express, two hotspots for the department.
