BAY MINETTE, Ala. – Manny Patrick and Jamerious Anderson led the Sun Chiefs to their third-straight win with an 87-54 mark over Pensacola State at Jack Robertson Arena Tuesday. Coastal South improved to 3-0 in November and 4-1 overall.
Patrick, out of McGill-Toolen Catholic was hot early and often with pull-up 3-pointers and Anderson (Baldwin County High) scored inside and out with big help from Justin Anderson, Melvin Baker, Lue Williams and more. (Individual stats were not available for this edition - Visit ACCCAAthletics.com).
Defensively the Chiefs shipwrecked the Pirates’ inside game and harassed the perimeter shooters all night.
Head coach Robby Robertson said his team played well knowing the Pirates are much better that the score reflects.
“Hats off to our guys for sticking with the game plan and defending so well all night. I was glad to see that we took it to them early and didn’t let them build a lead,” he said. “We balanced the inside and outside on offense well and did a good job defensively most of the game.”
He said smart defense was a big key to the outcome.
“They (the Pirates) are one of the best free-throw-shooting teams around at about 80 percent, so we made it a key point to guard, but not foul. And I was pleased to see we only had one on us in the second half. Discipline was a big part of tonight’s approach and I don’t remember the last time I’ve seen a college basketball game with just one team foul in a half. So, credit the guys for keeping (the Pirates) off the line.”
The Chiefs host Snead State Friday (Nov. 13) at Robertson Arena (Visit ACCCAAthletics.com for schedule/times updates or changes). They close out November on the road at LaGrange Nov. 18 and at Talladega Nov. 21. League play starts in January.
Nov, 1, the Sun Chiefs took a 102-62 win at Florida Coastal. Virgil Crawford came off the bench to lead the Coastal South men with 16 points. Crawford shot 100 percent hitting all eight of his eight field goals. The Chiefs took control early and led 48-24 at the half.
Five players scored in double figures with Calvin Finch adding 15 (7-for-8), Tyler Presswood 13, Vincent Douglas 11 and Jamey Sanders 10 while Manny Patrick (McGill-Toolen Catholic) posted nine and Jamerious Anderson (Baldwin County High) recorded eight points.
Presswood led the grabs off the boards with 10 (five offensive, five defensive) rebounds for CACC. Finch had nine total with seven at the defensive end and Lue Williams (Escambia County High) had seven total as the team tallied 39 for the night.
Anderson and Williams led in assists with four each. Patrick led in steals with seven of the team’s 18 total. Sanders led at the free-throw line making four of five. Presswood and Williams were 3-of-4 each at the line. Douglas led from beyond the arc hitting three of his six 3-point shots.
