MOBILE, Ala. — The NCAA Men’s baseball postseason begins tomorrow, June 2. With their conference championship, the South Alabama Jaguars clinched a spot in the regional tournament. The Jaguars (39-19, 22-8) are coming off their 12th conference tournament championship in program history, making them one of the best in the Sun Belt.

Two former Spanish Fort Toros in infielder/Pitcher Will Luft and infielder Hunter Stokes have been consistent batters for the Jaguars this season. Luft has started 56 games this season with 210 at-bats, 40 runs, 59 hits, 30 RBI’s, nine doubles, three home runs and a batting average of .281. Stokes has played in 45 game and has started in 35 of them with 30 runs, 37 hits, 19 RBI’s, three home runs and a batting average of .314.

Former Foley Lion Zach Melton has been a part of the tremendous pitching for South Alabama. Melton has pitched in 24.2 innings and has thrown 25 strikeouts and allowed only 16 hits. Overall, The Jaguars pitching has only allowed a .272 batting average and 292 runs.

In the regionals tournament, they will playing in Hattiesburg, Miss., where the Southern Miss Golden Eagles (48-14) are one of 16 hosting No. 1 seeds. Joining No. 3 South Alabama and host Southern Miss in this bracket are the No. 2 Mississippi State Bulldogs (36-24) and the No. 4 University of Illinois-Chicago Flames (39-15). The regionals tournament is set up as a double elimination bracket.

The Jaguars will be play the Mississippi State Bulldogs June at 7 p.m. The Golden Eagles will be playing the Illinois-Chicago Flames on Friday. The losers will play each other on June 3 as will the winners of the Friday night games. Winners of the game three, four matchups will follow.

South Alabama has played the Bulldogs three times this season, they have come out with one win and two losses. The last matchup, however, the Jaguars came out with a 5-2 win over the No. 11 nationally ranked Bulldogs on April 18.

The Jaguars have a roster full of talent that have made them a consistent hitting team and a large amount of reliable pitchers that can slow down any batting offense. Overall as a team, the Jaguars have a .308 batting average, 476 runs and 73 home runs. If South Alabama wins the regional in Hattiesburg, they will move on to tougher opponents in the Super Regionals.

The Jags roster also includes Saraland High's Matt Peacock, Drew LaBounty (Pensacola Catholic) and Thomas Huston of Milton, Fla. / Pensacola State.

MSU's roster includes Daphne native Andrew Mahoney, II. The junior pitcher prepped at McGill-Toolen Catholic and played one season at San Jacinto JC in Texas.
