Three Tigers earn All-State Soccer honors

Posted

BAY MINETTE, Ala. — Baldwin County High had three players make the All-State Soccer Teams selected by the coaches of the Alabama High School Athletic Association. Wil Dobbins was named first team. David Garcia and Chris Stewart were named second team. Dobbins and Stewart are juniors and Garcia is a freshman.

Dobbins was also selected for the 2017 North-South boys’ soccer all-star team.

Dobbins serves as the keeper for BCHS varsity team and is credited with 14 shut-outs this season, matching the school's all-time record. He also served as a team captain.

Garcia scored 29 goals this season, setting a school record. The freshman forward is also credited with 15 assists.

Stewart scored five goals and had three assists and helped the team achieve 14 shutouts this season.

The team is under the direction of coach Rick Andrew who joined the BCHS faculty this school year.

“What a great year 2017 was for Baldwin County soccer, for us to reach another milestone by having not one, not two but three players on the 2017 all state soccer team is amazing,” said Andrew. The coach praised Dobbins for an outstanding season and great work ethic. “We are so proud of Wil Dobbins who recorded 14 shutouts and 16 wins this year. Wil is a young man who is a workaholic and a player that is never satisfied his improvement this year from day one is simply astonishing,” he said.

The coach also had high praise for Stewart and Garcia.

“Chris Stewart is another young man who has grown so much as a player but more importantly as a person this season. He went from being a forward who always had their name in the paper to a central defender who gets less press but should get more. He became the engineer that made our team run,” Andrew said.

Garcia was a game changer for the Tigers, Andrew said. “We have a shy freshmen forward who went from obscurity to being a headliner. He broke the BCHS mens soccer record for goals in a season. The record which stood since 2001 was shattered by David as he scored 29 goals and had 15 assists. The old record of 21 never had a chance because David improved with every game,” Andrew said.

The coach added that this season will serve as a building block for future success.

“Individual honors aren't stressed at BCHS as each player acknowledges that they couldn't do what they do without their teammates. The BCHS soccer program is happy for these young men but hope that none of them are satisfied. There is still way too much to accomplish.”
