Town of Loxley hosts annual summer camp

LOXLEY, Alabama — There will be something for everyone when the Town of Loxley begins its 15th Summer Youth Program next week at the Loxley Civic Center and Municipal Park.

The camp, which begins the day after Memorial Day, May 28, features daily activities and crafts throughout the five-week program, ending June 28.

Started in limited capacity in 2004 by then activities director Joey Knight, the camp is open to boys and girls ages 5 to 12. After drawing as many as 100 campers in its early years, the camp is now limited to 50, said Tina Harris, who came on board as activities director for the town in 2013.

“Now that school’s almost out, we’ve had a lot of calls from people showing asking questions about the camp,” Harris said, “so I’m hoping we have a good turnout, at least 40 or more.”

Registration for the camp is $150, which includes all art and craft supplies, special events, daily snacks and teachers, among other things. Lunch is provided at a cost of $2 per meal and a light breakfast will be offered for $1 per meal.

“Things are going to be a little bit different this year,” Harris said. “Debbie (Huffer), the person who has been doing the camp for the last several years, is not going to be able to do it this year, so we’ve had to hire a lot of new people, but we’ll figure it out. The important thing is that we provide these kids with a fun, safe environment.”

Harris said most of the programs will be confined to the Civic Center and Municipal Park grounds with possible field trips to the town library.

Margaret Odom with the Auburn Extension is planning some programs, Harris said, and the program will host Mobile Infirmary’s DeBakey Drug Education bus one day, featuring age-appropriate drug-education programs.

Harris said she is also hoping to welcome the Loxley Fire Department or Police Department at some point during the camp for programs and demonstrations.

The camp will also offer water days with slip and slides and other water activities every other week with an extended splash day offered the day before the last day of the camp on June 30.

“We just want to provide a variety of fun activities,” she said.
