Town of Summerdale talks upcoming events, future plans

SUMMERDALE - The Town of Summerdale is working hard towards new town developments, including the upcoming town tennis courts. The four lighted courts will be located on 2.5 acres at the intersection of First Street and East Jefferson Street, and will include a parking area.

Summerdale voted during June to pay $11,484 worth of grant invoices to grant management teams and engineers working on the project.

Trees on the site are being cleared, and the town is moving forward to purchase signage announcing the exact location of the upcoming courts.

The town is looking to build basketball courts potentially next to the tennis courts. The old police department building will be converted into restrooms and storage facilities for the courts.

Other business discussed during the June council includes:

  • Another exciting project coming to downtown involves the Tobacco Warehouse, which has been chosen by Design Alabama as a project site. Design Alabama will assist the town with ideas, suggestions, and plans to renovate the old building, while keeping its history and charm. Design Alabama teams will be in Summerdale August 27 - 29.
  • Plans are underway with waterline extensions to connect Town of Summerdale lines into ECBC’s existing pipes. Public Works is ready to run waterlines down County Road 34 as soon as submitted permits have been signed. Work on the project could potentially begin mid-June.
  • The Town of Summerdale’s 4th of July Fireworks Display is moving forward and will take place on Saturday, July 4 beginning at 9 p.m. Fireworks are purchased by the town. The display is handled by the town’s Volunteer Fire Department and fireworks are lit at Pioneer Park. The show typically lasts between 15 - 20 minutes, and free watermelon is provided by the town. Summerdale Police Department and Volunteer Fire Department will be onsite. Attendees are asked to practice social distancing guidelines at the event.
  • Approval was made to surplus and donate WatchGuard camera systems to the Town of Silverhill. Recently the City of Foley donated surplus cameras to Summerdale PD, allowing them to upgrade their system and thus provide this donation to Silverhill.
