Tragic shrimp boat accident leaves one missing and one dead

Posted

At approximately 4 a.m. Monday, Nov. 29, the 50-foot shrimp boat “The Chief” capsized 1.4 miles north of Fort Morgan Historical Park with three crew members onboard.

Wood Jones, captain of the vessel, was rescued at the Sand Island lighthouse by Captain Nic Parks approximately two hours after The Chief capsized.

United States Coast Guard searched the area with a 45-foot patrol boat, a fixed wing aircraft, and a helicopter along with patrol boats from ALEA’s Marine Patrol and the Alabama Marine Resources Division. Fort Morgan Volunteer Fire Department, Bon Secour Volunteer Fire Department, Daphne Search and Rescue, and Orange Beach Fire/Rescue have been searching the area and provided divers to clear the hull of the capsized vessel.

After hours of searching, dive team members located Mike Pitts of Foley close to the boat. The search for the second victim, Anthony Conway, is still ongoing.
