DAPHNE, Ala. – Face mask have long been essential equipment in American football. But face coverings are now required at all AHSAA contests.
At Jubilee Stadium in Daphne, the Trojans broke from a 19-19 stalemate with the Lee-Montgomery Generals on a 76-yard touchdown by Veontai Williams with three minutes, seven seconds left in the fourth quarter. DHS then held on for 26-19 home win.
Daphne head coach Kenny King said the Generals were a good test for his team who brought a versatile attacking offense and a tough, scrappy defensive.
“When we saw them get off the bus and how big they are, we knew it was going to be a physical game,” he said about the Lee players. “We expected them to be tough and have a lot of speed. I appreciate them coming so far to play us. Three hours on a bus, but they really challenged us in every phase of the game. Great speed, ball handling and their defense never let up.
“It was a test. And that’s why I’m so proud of our guys,” he added. “They never quit. Made the big plays. They were a great first test for us. We made some mistakes on our end, but never gave up and found a way to get the win. And of course we’re glad to have this victory and I’m just proud of the way we kept fighting. But it’s big step to go from week one to week to, so we need to work on some things and get ready.”
Daphne scored first on a 16-yard, Trent Battle to Travis Crum pass on the first play of the second quarter. The score was tied 6-6 in the first quarter when Lee running back Reginald Davis scored on a 25-yard run. Both special teams missed their extra point tries.
The Trojans took the lead again on another Battle to Crum pass (37 yards) with nine minutes left in the half. The DHS score was set up by a long return by Kaden Blackwell and Cory Bonner’s extra point made it 13-6. But Lee answered again with a 43-yard TD pass from Jakel Williams to Davis, but the point-after attempt missed and DHS led 13-12.
Daphne took a 19-12 lead at the half after capping a 70-yard drive with a Battle to Blackwell TD pass from the Lee 7-yard line. Lee threatened to score again, but Cameron Long’s interception with 44 seconds left before the half stopped the Generals’ advance.
The third quarter went scoreless. But early in the fourth Lee scored on a 16-yard TD run by Davis tied the Trojans 19-19 with the extra point. The teams traded possession until the big run by Williams. Lee made a final push, but another interception by Long helped seal the Daphne victory.
The Trojans travel to Davidson next for a Thursday night game and their first Class 7A Region 1 battle of the season with the Warriors.
In all, six Baldwin teams took wins on the opening night of AHSAA football in 2020. Robertsdale and Foley renewed their nearly 100-year rivalry with the Golden Bears defeating the Lions for the first time since 2004.
