Billie Jo Underwood, a Certified Public Accountant from Summerdale, has announced her candidacy for the Baldwin County Commission District 3 seat in the upcoming 2018 election.

Underwood, 50, is a Republican. Born in Foley, AL, she is a lifelong resident of Baldwin County. Her love for Baldwin County is the primary reason for her decision to run for office. Underwood states, “I believe I can make a difference. I want to preserve and protect the quality of life in Baldwin County. My business and financial background as a Certified Public Accountant and my civic experience serving on the Summerdale Planning Commission and the Baldwin County Planning Commission has given me a unique perspective on how to plan for growth and development in the County while maintaining a vibrant local economy. As growth continues, we must properly manage impacts on our infrastructure such as roads, schools, and public safety as well as protecting our natural resources for future generations to enjoy.”

Underwood holds a bachelor’s degree in Accounting from the University of South Alabama, an associate’s degree in Business Administration from Faulkner State Junior College, and is a proud “Top Ten” 1985 graduate of Foley High School.

For more than thirty years, Underwood has worked for her sister, Norma Giles CPA in Summerdale, AL. She is now a partner in the firm Giles, Underwood, and Wilson, LLC located on Highway 59 in Summerdale. Underwood believes her experience in financial and tax accounting will be beneficial in helping her understand the County budget process and financial implications of decisions made by the County Commission.

Billie Jo has been married for 27 years to Gary Underwood, who is also a lifelong resident and pecan farmer in Baldwin County. She helps run their family business Underwood Pecan Farm with locations in Foley and Summerdale.

While District 3 encompasses the areas in and around Loxley, Robertsdale, Silverhill, and Summerdale, voters in Baldwin County vote at-large for County Commissioners. Underwood is committed to serving all people of Baldwin County, not just those in District 3.

In her spare time, Underwood is an avid sports fan and loves deep sea fishing. Underwood played basketball at Foley High School and in recognition of her outstanding career, Foley High inducted her into its Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010.

Underwood is a lifelong member and regularly attends Summerdale Assembly of God Church.
