Fred’s in Robertsdale joins effort for Children’s Miracle Network

ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — This is the time of year when many turn their thoughts to doing a little spring cleaning. One local business is inviting residents to combine this effort with plans to raise money for a good cause.

Fred’s in Robertsdale will host a yard sale fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 6. Proceeds from the yard sale will benefit the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

The fundraiser is part of a nationwide effort by Fred’s stores across the United States which kicks off May 7 and runs through June 17, said Terry Knapp, Robertsdale Fred’s store manager.

“This is part of something that Fred’s stores have been doing for the last 12 years,” Knapp said. Over the years through its balloon fundraiser, Fred’s stores across the United States have raised over $6.1 million for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

According to its website, childrensmiraclenetworkhospitals.org, the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals raises funds and awareness for 170 member hospitals that provide 32 million treatments each year to kids across the U.S. and Canada.

“Donations stay local to fund critical treatments and healthcare services, pediatric medical equipment and charitable care,” according to the website. Since 1983, the network has raised more than $5 billion, most of it $1 at a time through the charity’s Miracle Balloon icon.

During May and June, Fred’s stores nationwide are participating in the fundraising effort. For a $1 donation, customers can put their name on a balloon in support and all of the proceeds benefit the Children’s Miracle Network.

Sponsorship balloons are also available for local businesses, who can donate $50 or $100 to get their name on a larger balloon which will be displayed in the store.

“It allows local businesses to join in the fundraising effort,” Knapp said, “while at the same time providing an opportunity for them to advertise their business in our stores.”

To kick off the campaign, on Saturday, May 6, Fred’s in Robertsdale will host a yard sale fundraiser. For a $20 fee, residents can come and set up stalls in the Fred’s parking lot at the Robertsdale location, 17870 Baldwin Farms Place (corner of Alabama 59 and U.S. 90). Baldwin Farms Apartments has also agreed to allow Fred’s to use their grass area for slots.

“We’re hoping to get about 50 participants,” Knapp said. “We know that they could rent a stall at a flea market for less, but we are hoping that residents will want to come and help us in our efforts to raise money for a good cause.”

Knapp said while the yard sale is mainly for people wanting to sell clothing, household items and other type goods, those wanting to sell arts and crafts items are also welcome.

In addition to the yard sale, Knapp said, Fred’s is also partnering with Flowers Bread Co., distributors of Bunny Bread, among other partners, and will be selling hotdog lunches, which will include a drink and chips.
