Baldwin County residents have choices for high-speed internet

ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — Residents in Baldwin County now have choices when it comes to high-speed internet.

Officials with Mediacom recently met with business leaders in Robertsdale to discuss the launch of its XTreme 1Gig Internet service.

“Two years ago, Mediacom made a three-year commitment to spend $1 billion to deliver 1-Gig broadband service to our customers,” said Carrie Boggs, Mediacom’s senior manager for Government Affairs said at the Central Baldwin Chamber of Commerce’s Coffee Chat on Thursday, Sept. 14. “Because of the demand we decided we needed to step up our commitment and basically accomplished our goal in half the time.”

Mediacom, which maintains a support office in Loxley, provides service to customers in 17 rural counties in Alabama at speeds ranging from 60 meg up to 1 Gig.

“We provide service to many areas that cannot otherwise get service,” said Boggs, who gave a presentation at the breakfast meeting along with Jason Clabo, director of area operations, held at Mama Lou’s restaurant in Robertsdale. “Compared to many of the cities we provide service to cities like Gulf Shores and Orange Beach would be considered among the largest.”

Through its fiber-optic network, Mediacom is able to deliver 1-Gig speeds to residents and businesses in 71 “true Gigabit” communities in 17 counties. In addition, residences in some non-incorporated areas also receive Mediacom’s advanced digital services.

In Baldwin County, Mediacom provides service to 15 areas, including Barnwell, Bay Minette, Daphne, Fairhope, Fish River, Fort Morgan, Gulf Shores, Loxley, Orange Beach, Perdido Beach, Robertsdale, Silverhill, Spanish Cove, Spanish Fort and Stapleton.

“Baldwin County is one of our most challenging areas to provide service because every area is so different,” Boggs said.

While in many areas, the equipment is working to catch up to the technology, Clabo said, Mediacom is working hard to provide service to more than 185,000 homes and business along its network.

“We are excited about this technology,” Clabo said, “and about the possibilities of the future.”
