BALDWIN COUNTY, Alabama -- Investigators with the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office don’t believe foul play was involved after a dead body was found near the Interstate 10 rest area at the Alabama-Florida border on Monday.

Capt. Clint Cadenhead with the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office Investigative Command said they received the call at about 10:15 a.m. Monday morning that Alabama Department of Transportation employees found a body off the roadway in a wooded area.

“Investigators were told that the area is checked frequently, and the body wasn’t there a week ago,” Cadenhead said in a phone interview on Tuesday. “There is no evidence of foul play at the scene and we believe at this time it might be a transient. Investigators have some leads they will be following up on today and are hoping to be able to identify the body sooner rather than later.”

Cadenhead said the body has been sent to the Department of Forensic Sciences in Mobile to determine the persons identification, along with the cause/manner of death. The lab will also be running toxicology reports.

“It could take months to get that information back,” he said. “Investigators will be following up with the Coroner’s Office to try to figure out who the person is.”
