Bay Minette working on various grant projects

BAY MINETTE, Alabama — This year alone, Bay Minette will implement more than $2 million in grant projects. Some of that work is already underway at John H. White Park, Ulmer Park, Douglasville School of Arts & Recreation and the Bay Minette Airport.

The extension of the sidewalk path along Dobson Avenue, from Seventh Street to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, is expected to begin soon as well.

An Impact 100 grant for $91,000 will help provide for a new gym floor, walking track, pavilion, community garden and audiovisual equipment at the Douglasville School of Arts & Recreation. Local matching funds and in-kind work is also being provided by the City and NBU. That work is in progress and the project is expected to be completed in late May. This facility is home to Light of the City, a free afterschool tutoring program and summer day camp for area children.

At White Park on South Street, new playground equipment will be installed and a new pavilion will be constructed, including bathrooms. Ulmer Park on Shedrick Hardy Parkway will also receive new playground equipment and upgrades to the pavilion and bathroom spaces. These two projects are each being funded through $98,705 Land and Water Conservation grants from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs, with local match and in-kind services provided by the City of Bay Minette and North Baldwin Utilities.

The sidewalk project is being funded through a $373,520 Transportation Alternatives Program grant from the Alabama Department of Transportation. This project will also include the paving of Dobson Avenue from Seventh Street to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

Construction is also well underway for an additional 20 T-hangars with taxiway access at the Bay Minette Municipal Airport. There are currently 10 hangars at the airport and long wait lists to fill the spaces. This $1.5 project is being funded by an Alabama Department of Transportation Airport Development Grant, General Obligation Development Warrants, and local financing.

“Bay Minette is very fortunate to have a number of grant projects beginning construction or about to begin construction,” said Mayor Bob Wills. “Many thanks to Clair Dorough, our Grants Coordinator, and others at City Hall for their hard work in obtaining these grant monies for our community.”
