Historic Blakeley State Park invites the public to be a part of the annual “Battlefield Blitz 5K and Fun Run,” scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 25, 2020. Held on Alabama’s largest Civil War battlefield in Spanish Fort, the Blitz is a unique community event which will benefit the park’s many special programs and projects.

The boom of a cannon will signal the start of the race promptly at 8 a.m. Participants will wind their way through a custom course along portions of one of the nation’s best-preserved battlefields where Union and Confederate forces clashed over 150 years ago. Awards will be given in multiple age groups. A one-mile “fun run,” designed for casual competitors who want to be a part of the event but may not be interested in the formal race, will take place later that morning. Refreshments will be available to all participants.

A number of local sponsors are generously supporting the park through this event. They include presenting sponsor Bay Breeze Heating and Air Conditioning, featured sponsors Lad Drago State Farm, Sheila Stone Schoen Attorney at Law, and Midway Lumber; community sponsors Mosquito Joe; B’s Bees, and Publix. SaltyBrew Coffee Company will be on hand early that morning with their portable coffee shop.

Historic Blakeley State Park preserves and interprets the largest National Register site in the eastern United States, including the site of one of the Civil War’s last major battles and the early Alabama town of Blakeley. Located in the heart of the Mobile-Tensaw Delta, it also boasts one of the region’s most rich and diverse natural habitats. The park offers hiking, biking, cabins, and RV and tent camping in addition to regular boat excursions into the delta and numerous educational programs throughout the year.

Preregistration for the Battlefield Blitz is only $20. To register or for more information, visit www.blakeleypark.com/events. The Park is located on State Hwy. 225 about five miles north of Spanish Fort.
