Celebrate the 100th anniversary of women’s right to vote this weekend

Raise a glass this weekend and celebrate 100 years of equal voting rights for women.

On Sunday Feb. 9, the League of Women Voters of Baldwin County is hosting a celebration at Fairhope Brewing Company to recognize both the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guaranteeing American women the right to vote and the 100th anniversary of the League of Women Voters.

The organization was born a century ago as women fought to be seen as equals to men in matters of elections. The demand for the vote became a centerpiece of the women’s rights movement that saw nearly a century’s worth of protests. Susan B. Anthony and other activists raised public awareness and lobbied the government to grant voting rights to women.

“I think people do forget that we had to fight for this and hopefully this will serve as a reminder or a teaching tool for younger people to know that for us to even have this right it was a lot of work and a lot of people sacrificed to make this happen,” said Elizabeth Morcom, secretary, League of Women Voters of Baldwin County.

At Sunday’s celebration there will free live music with the singing duo, Sugarcane Jane, door prizes, trivia, and birthday cake! Tin-tin’s Rock and Roll Food Truck will be there from 4-7 p.m., and kids are welcome.

Members of the League of Women Voters will also be on hand to do what they were tasked with 100 years ago by their predecessors: encourage all Americans to register and vote.

“Our purpose is to educate people about voting and help them vote,” Morcom said. “It’s an important election year and we want everybody to get out there and vote their hearts.

Morcom added, “We are a non-partisan group. We’re not rooting for either side We’re just rooting for people to exercise their right to vote.”
