City of Robertsdale honors veterans on Memorial Day

ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — The city of Robertsdale honored 15 veterans during Memorial Day ceremonies held Monday, May 27 at Gordon Coley Park on Alabama 59.

The program began with the raising of the flag and TAPS with the Presentation of Colors by the Robertsdale High School Naval JROTC color guard and TAPS played by former RHS band director and RES music program director Susie Vivar.

Bibles were presented to veterans, including the guest speaker, Baldwin County Sheriff Hoss Mack.

Begun in 1993, the program’s first honoree was Mable Frey, auxiliary president for the local VFW and a veteran of World War II, the program was expanded to include several veterans as a way to honor local veterans, said Mayor Charles Murphy.

This year’s honorees included Frey’s son, James Murray Frey. Other recipients were (pictured in no order) Joshua Lilly, Dan Patrick Newton, H.M. Kroll, Larry McDaniel, Bill H. Bengtson, Roy L. Nelson, Peter T. Aguon, Denise Perkins, who also accepted a Bible on behalf of her husband, Dennis Perkins; and Mike Morgan. Vivar also accepted a Bible on behalf of her husband, Michael Vivar. Also honored, but not present for the ceremony, were Jason B. Ginn and Cheryl R. D’Andrea.
