ELBERTA, Alabama — The Snook Christian Academy Eagles overcame an early deficit, then came from behind after seeing a 10-point lead slip away to collect a 22-18 AISA Class A region win over Meadowview Christian Academy of Selma on Homecoming night at Elberta High stadium Thursday night.

“This is the most resilient team I have ever had the pleasure to coach,” said head coach Keith Smith following Thursday night’s victory. “They have gone through so much and they never gave up. I cannot be more proud.”

The win for the Eagles was the first since Oct. 14, 2018 after the team was forced to cancel its 2019 season for lack of players. Two more games to begin 2020 were canceled because of Coronavirus, while another game was canceled following Hurricane Sally last month.

Thursday night’s game was moved from Summerdale Middle School because of the threat of severe weather due to Hurricane Delta.

The Eagles fell behind early 6-0 when the Trojans scored following a fumbled punt late in the first quarter.

Snook took the lead, scoring on a 10-play, 60-yard drive capped by a one-yard run by Phillip Butts and a 2-point conversion run by Kendrick Koen to make the score 8-6 with 7:50 remaining in the second quarter.

Snook recovered an onside kick and drove from the Meadowbrock 43 with quarterback Robert Dunn taking it in himself with 4:22 to go in the half. Holder Corbin Hall took the fumbled snap and ran it in himself for the 2-point conversion to put the Eagles up 16-6 at halftime.

The Trojans scored a pair of touchdowns, one with 4:43 to go in the third, and one with 7:50 remaining in the fourth,  but missed on both 2-point conversion attempts, to take an 18-16 lead, but Snook was able to answer quickly with a 35-yard kickoff return by Butts to set the Eagles up in Trojan territory at the 25.

Five plays and two Meadowview penalties later Dunn connected with Hall on a 15-yard touchdown pass. The 2-point conversion failed leaving the score at 22-18 with 5:50 to go in the game.

Snook was then able to hold the Trojans without a first down, taking the ball back at their own 47 and running out the clock to secure the win.

With the win, the Eagles are now 1-3 overall, 1-2 in AISA Class A Region 2 play with a pair of opponents remaining, on the road Friday night at Sparta Academy in Evergreen (4-2, 2-1) before finishing the season Oct. 23 at home in Summerdale against South Choctaw Academy of Toxey (1-6, 1-2).
